While over 20,000 Indigenous Australians and between 2,000 and 2,500 settlers are estimated to have been killed, there are very few monuments or memorials to the frontier wars, and no battle sites have been preserved. The only large scale war to have taken place in Australia was the fighting between Indigenous Australians and European settlers which began shortly after white settlement in 1788 and continued until the early 1930s. While few of the sites of the fighting between European settlers and Indigenous Australians have been marked, much less preserved, there are still a number of former fortifications and airfields. Many Australians have an interest in military history, and there are many military museums and preserved historic sites scatted around the country.
